Conditions & Treatments of the Nose

The nose is essential to our daily lives. We use it to smell the world around us, and do one of our most basic functions: breath. When problems arise, the specialist at Bergen Ear, Nose, & Throat Associates, PA, are here to help find a solution personalized to your needs. Here are some of the procedures we offer:

Septoplasty

When the nasal septum, the bone, and cartilage that divides the nasal cavity, is not straight, it may block one of the nostrils. We perform septoplasty to straighten the nasal septum and remove any blocking cartilage and/or bone. The procedure is done under general anesthesia, lasts less than one hour and is all done through the inside of your nose. Recovery normally lasts about two weeks.

Turbinate reduction

There are three turbinates on each side of the nose, which clean and humidify the air as it moves through your nose. Occasionally issues arise where the turbinate increases in size, and causes increased air resistance and nasal obstruction. In such circumstances, tubinate reduction is performed to correct the problem by reducing the turbinate size. There are several types of turbinate surgeries, but traditionally a surgeon makes a small incision in the lining mucosa of the turbinate and removes the underlying bone, thereby reducing submucosal turbinate tissue. A simplified version includes the shrinkage of the tissue with by electrically ablating the tissue, this is occasionally done in the office.

Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery

We perform functional endoscopic sinus surgery to resolve sinus problems by restoring nasal drainage pathways. We use a telescope to enter the nostrils and find the area of obstruction and then carefully remove the obstruction – polyps, thickened bone or mucosa. Recovery normally lasts two weeks, during which time you must regularly rinse your nose to remove the normal crusts that form to help the healing process and improve your breathing.
