Conditions & Treatments of the Throat

When our patients experience issues with pain or discomfort in their throat, or issues breathing or swallowing, we have a wide variety of options available to remedy the root cause.

Direct Laryngoscopy

A laryngoscopy is a medical procedure used to obtain a view of the vocal folds and glottis or for procedures on the voice box (larynx) or other parts of the upper tracheobronchial tree. With direct laryngoscopy, the patient is under general anesthesia, a metal tube (laryngoscope) is inserted into the mouth, followed by several precise movements to make a view of the glottis possible and then do any further necessary procedures (e.g. biopsy to remove tissue, dilatation to widen a narrowed area).

Microlaryngoscopy

Microlaryngoscopy is used to examine a patient’s larynx to find and treat problems with the voice box. It is done using a laryngoscope inserted through your mouth into your voice box. Further procedures can then be performed with either small instruments or lasers to remove any areas of concern. Recovery is quick, but may result in a slight sore throat that last for a short period after the procedure and some voice changes (thatc changes as the vocal cords heal).

Laryngeal Reconstruction

The larynx can be severely damaged from trauma, cancer or other causes. Laryngeal reconstruction surgery may be done to restore the structure or function of the areas affected, and help restore breathing and speech.

Tracheal Reconstruction

A tracheal reconstruction is a procedure to either repair a severely damaged trachea, i.e. windpipe, or to widen the trachea to allow for easier breathing. This procedure involves either removing the narrowed or damaged portion and reattaching the normal ends or inserting a small piece of cartilage into the narrowed section of the trachea.

Thyroplasty

When a patient has weak or paralyzed vocal cords, they can have a weak, breathy voice, which requires considerable effort to produce. Thyroplasty is a procedure aimed to help correct this vocal cord weakness. The most common cause of this is partial injury to the recurrent laryngeal nerve, which is responsible for controlling the intrinsic muscles of the larynx. The procedure is relatively quick and painless, usually performed under local anesthesia, and lasting 1 to 2 hours. Depending on the patient and cause of weakness augmentation is achieved with various material that are either temporary or permanent.

Laryngectomy

Laryngectomy involves the removal of the larynx and the separation of the airway from the mouth, esophagus and nose. This procedure is typically performed on individuals who suffered from extensive cancers of the larynx. If you need a laryngectomy, our team of surgeons and medical professionals are here with you every step of the way.

Pharyngectomy

A pharyngectomy is the total or partial removed of the pharynx, which is the cavity at the back of the mouth that opens into the esophagus. It is typically performed to treat cancers of the pharynx. The procedure varies from removal of small tumors on the back wall of the oropharynx, to major surgery requiring reconstruction.
